About SABL »
Introduction
What initially began as a network for displaced Singaporeans has now evolved to become a society where close bonds and friendships are forged between members.
Today, with about 100 Singaporeans living in Belgium and Luxembourg, the SABL plays a vital role as an organization where we can reach out to each other, as well as maintain and promote our unique Singaporean identity away from home.
Whether you’ve been sent here for professional reasons (work), or you’ve chosen to live here for personal reasons (family), the SABL affords you an outlet to catch up with fellow “little red-dot” islanders, and drop a few “LAHs” into your conversation without the other person going “huh?”. Apart from social reasons, the SABL also does its best to help newcomers adapt to the different environment here in Belgium.
The SABL
The Singapore Association in Belgium and Luxembourg (SABL) was founded in 1991, as a non-profit organization, under the guidance and support of the Singapore Embassy in Brussels. A handful of Singaporeans were then invited to formally create the association, and form the first executive committee of the association.
The Objectives
The main objective of the SABL is to foster a Singaporean consciousness. This is achieved through social, recreational, cultural and educational activities organized by the SABL Executive Committee.
Together with its contact both here and in Singapore, the SABL acts as a source of information, assistance and guidance. Members who have lived in Belgium and Luxembourg for numerous years are also of great help.
Through the SABL, members are also updated in the latest happenings in Singapore.
The Members
Since establishment, membership has continued to grow steadily, and the SABL is now proud to include not only Singaporeans, but also a host of other nationalities, including Belgians, Malaysians, British and a myriad of other Europeans.
As Singapore is a multi-racial society that enjoys a mix of cultural influences, anyone who is interested in getting to know Singapore, its people and cultures is welcome to join the SABL.
His Excellency The Singapore Ambassador and spouse are Honorary Members of the Association.
